“Idolatry” is when we prefer the symbols of religion to the facts of life. The “profane” is when we hold life up to our imagination and conclude that it is life which is wanting.

I don’t understand. Life doesn’t live up to our imagination?
Life is richer than human thought, but if we live in our imaginations, and imagine life going certain ways, we can think that life isn’t as good as it could be. When we imagine love coming to us in certain ways we can be obvivious if it shows up in a different form.
