MYSTIC
I’m not an atheist nor a theist, I am a mystic. This means I hold our universe to be the manifestation of a vast unspeakable mystery which we cannot know, but must never forget because it is our ultimate home.
I refuse to choose between religion and science. I believe in science because it draws my mind closer to that mystery. But I also believe in religion because it addresses the mystery in terms understandable to my heart.
Through science, I seek to understand the infinite offspring of the one mystery, but through religion I feel my call to serve them.
“I refuse to choose between religion and science. ” Yet religion pays your rent, right? Or is “Presbyterian” not a religion? Do you not work in a CHURCH? You, sir, are a fraud: an atheist who can’t come clean because the church is your meal ticket.
So David, you believe if someone is scientific they can’t be religious? Are you really so afraid that God won’t hold up to honest inquiry?
“So David, you believe if someone is scientific they can’t be religious? ”
No, Jim, I don’t believe that.
What I believe that you are a a false prophet: you don’t represent the views of the people who PAY YOU to represent their views. I believe you are a slave to the dollar. I believe you are a hypocrite.
Do you believe what the church who PAYS YOU stands for? No? Then be a man and resign. Go found your own church.
Of course you won’t, will you? Because you like the money. That makes you both a hypocrite and a coward.
I preach the same message on Sunday as here. The people who pay my salary know all of this. So then we must ask why you are so eager to cast bad intent on what I say, instead of refuting my ideas? David you can pretend to refute anyone using insults, but you will only fool yourself. What about my ideas do you disagree? Can we have that conversation? Why is this bothering you so? Why do you keep coming back? What is your heart really saying to you?
As a career scientist, I am overjoyed to have found a congregation and a church leader willing to reconcile the overwhelming majesty of science with the belief that there is an unfathomable goodness giving our fleeting human life significance.
You preach that all are worthy of respect and you are very courteous here in this public forum. For what it’s worth, I do not believe anyone in your congregation would fault you for disregarding unkind comments that attack you personally and scream at you in all caps.
Thank you, Nano Mouse. Feel free to share your scientific insights anytime here. I would be grateful to learn from you.
