Mitt Romney raised many eyebrows on his trip to Israel. Besides saying povby erty in occupied territories is caused by cultural differences (instead of the occupation itself), Romney made another very interesting slip. After seeing the Israeli health care system, he praised it as a model. The problem? The reason it does such a good job is that it is a single payer government monitored system. “Socialism” does not have to supplant democracy, or even markets, but it does mean that we remember that human lives are more important than profits, and that we are responsible for how we treat one another, not some mythic “invisible hand” of the market.
