Isn’t it strange when people think they are being persecuted if they cannot control the lives of others? Rick Santorum is riding the wave of resentment quite successfully at the moment. The problem for him and others using hate to gain power, is that conservatives are not really motivated by fear or hatred any more than are liberals. The problem is not that one is conservative, the problem when fundamentalist’s pretend to be conservatives so they can seize power. A real conservative does not want to control others, they just want to stay in control of their own choices. So at some point using the claim that one is being persecuted when prevented from forcing one’s religion on others backfires. Ana Marie Cox writes for the Guardian and has some thoughts about this paradox:
Perfect, once again! Absolutely right.
Thank you Mark. I love the church but some days we look like a bunch of drunk hillbillies throwing bottles at passing cars, thinking it’s okay because we’ve written a bible verse on the side of the bottles.
